New Mexico is an incredible place to call home for anyone with a thirst for adventure and a love of the outdoors. The city of Albuquerque is a stone's throw from countless world-class hiking, biking, and climbing opportunities, and our real estate agents are excited to share some of their favorite ways to stay active in Albuquerque.
- Hike Piedra Lisa Canyon - 13225 Menaul Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111
The City of Albuquerque maintains dozens of hiking trails within the Sandia Foothills Open Space, a 2,650-acre wilderness area east of the city. There are a lot of wonderful hikes here, but the Piedra Lisa Canyon Trail is a great starting point. Departing from the Piedra Lisa Trailhead, this 2-mile out-and-back hike is a moderately challenging route that offers spectacular scenery, including an expansive view of the city from a rocky outcropping. Leashed pets are allowed on the trail, and it's just a short drive from these Albuquerque homes for sale.
- Kayak the Rio Grande - Albuquerque, NM 87114
Floating through the Rio Grande River Valley offers a unique perspective of Albuquerque and the surrounding area. The river meanders through rich bottomland that supports varied plant life and frequently hosts bald eagles and great blue herons. The best local section of the Rio Grande for a paddling trip starts in the village of Algodones—about 18 river miles north of Albuquerque—and ends in the city at the Alameda Boulevard Bridge. Guided paddling and rafting trips are available through Quiet Waters Paddling Adventures.
- Bike the Paseo del Bosque Trail - Alameda Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114
There are some great trails within the Albuquerque city limits, but the Paseo del Bosque Trail stands out as one of the best. This 16-mile point-to-point trail is a paved multi-use route, open to hiking and biking. It roughly follows the course of the Rio Grande from north to south through the city, passing through several excellent parks and picnic areas along the way (a side trip into Aldo Leopold Forest is well worth your time). It's a perfect place for a scenic bike ride, and the trail is entirely uninterrupted by road crossings along its entire length. The northern trailhead of the Paseo del Bosque Trail offers ample parking just off Alameda Boulevard.
- Explore Petroglyph National Monument - Western Trail NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120
A few miles west of Albuquerque, Petroglyph National Monument preserves a beautiful landscape and rich history. Thousands of Native American petroglyphs, carved by the Pueblo people between 1300 and the late 1600s, can be seen on the rock surfaces throughout the park. Several hiking trails provide opportunities to see the petroglyphs, including the 2.2-mile round-trip Rinconada Canyon Trail, which includes views of about 300 of them. The trail is open to foot travel only from 8 am to 5 pm.
- Summit Sandia Peak - Forest Service 333 Rd, Albuquerque, NM 87122
Starting just northeast of Albuquerque and ascending to the highest point on Sandia Peak within Cibola National Forest, the La Luz Trail is a spectacular hike that will take you 7.5 miles into the mountains. This is a challenging hike that gains 3,200 feet in elevation but rewards hikers with truly incredible views. That being said, it's best suited for experienced hikers and requires a degree of physical fitness and preparation. For an alternative view of the Sandia Mountains that requires less exertion, check out the Sandia Peak Tramway.
